Abdul Mati Klarwein (1932-2002) was born in Germany and fled to Palestine at a young age. After moving to Paris in his teens, Mati studied with Fernand Leger, Salvador Dalí and Ernst Fuchs. Fuchs taught him the Mische technique- an oil paint mixed technique developed by Van Eyck to allow light to enter the surface, suffusing the work with long life.

Mati traveled throughout his whole life living in various places: India, Jamaica, New York, New Mexico, Brazil, Morocco, Cuba, nourishing his etheric self with the mysticism and symbolism of each cultural paradigm he entered. Symbols became a defining form of communication for his artwork:

¨The Word develops Intelligence, the Symbol develops the Spirit.¨

While living in New York, Mati teamed up with Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis and Santana amongst many other musicians who used his images for their album covers.

About The Cards

¨The first time I saw Mati Klarwein’s art, I was filled with awe. Rarely does an artist incorporate such technical skill with a rich knowledge of multi-layered esoterica and the exploration of alternative dimensions. I felt drawn to Mati’s work immediately.

A year or so later, his daughter Serafine and I sat on a train speeding through the Irish countryside and brainstormed about an oracle deck featuring Mati’s art. The result of that conversation is The Oracular Tachyon. In creating the deck, I read through Mati’s writings and matched phrases with images that spoke to me and resonated at the same level as Mati’s words. I drew upon my knowledge of the Tarot to create a system that echoes the Tarot (especially in the first 22 cards, or Major Arcana) but also stands alone as its own distinct divinatory modality. My intention and continued hope is that The Oracular Tachyon can help Mati’s powerful art reach a broader audience, while also offering a powerful tool for path work,
healing, psychological growth, and spiritual insight.¨
